Sustainability School: OceanBound Material
It's no surprise we love our planet and its people, who doesn't! We go into a green state of mind for every formula and product we create, considering our local communities and environment in every decision we make.
Why OceanBound Material?
You may have seen we're pretty passionate about OceanBound Material, proudly incorporating it into our manufacturing process. But what is OceanBound Material and why do we love it so much?
What is OceanBound Material?
OceanBound Material refers to plastic waste that is at risk of ending up in oceans – that means, all plastic near waterways that may find its way through rivers, lakes, and seas. It is estimated that OBM generates 80% of plastic marine litter that includes a small fraction of commercially recyclable plastic waste.
Every kilo of OceanBound Material is potential pollution that is transformed into a recyclable resource. All plastic parts made in HDPE, PP or PET can be made from OceanBound Material.
Where is it collected?
Ocean plastic in high-risk areas within a 50km distance of an ocean coastline or waterway that potentially leads into oceans. Primarily this ocean bound plastic waste is also collected from big organisations, landfills, schools, warehouses and even from plastic banks instead of unethical disposal.
How does it work?
We're glad you asked...
OceanBound Materials (or abandoned plastic waste) are collected from high-risk areas and recycled into various forms of plastic pellets.
After this, the recycled pellets are ready to be used to manufacture in our hotel bottles, tubes, caps and refillables which is then sent to our hotel partners, ready for guests to use and to become a part of the OBM life cycle to minimise ocean pollution in our environment.
Incorporating OceanBound Material in our packaging and produced manufacturing process is waste management made for the longevity of our oceans. This form of recycling not only gives back to our planet immediately, but also continuously keeps us conscious of the decisions we make regarding our environmental responsibility and in turn scrapes more than just the surface.
The Environmental Impact of OceanBound Material
By reducing our dependence of raw material in the manufacturing of our amenities, we will reduce the strain on our ecosystems and protect our oceans from macro plastics and micro plastics polluting our waterways.
VANITY GROUP as a sustainably conscious company is always working to see ocean life in all its beauty and abundance and will do all we can to minimise ocean bound plastics.
How do I know if my hotel collection incorporates OceanBound Material?
All VANITY GROUP products made using OceanBound Material will tell you on the bottle! You will find “Made from OceanBound Material” written on the side of a bottle or tube, so you know that you'll be assisting in getting ocean bound plastic out of the ocean.
From our packaging to our products and even our partners, we innately strive to be sustainable. Read more about our commitment to sustainability here.
